English Language Learners
We work with a lot of English Language Learners in our play/create/build classes, and we have noticed how this work creates an inspiring context for language development and connection. Something beautiful happens when children realize we are all holding the same kind of material, like metal, plastic, wire, mesh, or a box….. and it is powerful when we can then add a shared language to that experience. Also, as you can hear in the name, play/create/build is full of action! We “speak” to each other through our movements and choices with the materials. This communication happens when children work with found materials, but also when they paint, collage, engage in dramatic play, build with blocks, and more. As facilitators of our play/create/build classes, we are honored to witness their “messages” through the collections they are creating and how they work with them.
