People are often hesitant to use cans because of concerns about pointed edges, but they are unique and accessible materials that are so useful for building, arranging, organizing, and engaging in dramatic play. One teacher wrote to us with this question: “I was trying to save an empty can of tomatoes and couldn't figure out how to remove the sharp parts.” If the rim is smooth after opening the can, our suggestion is to wash the can carefully and decide if you’d like to keep the paper label or not. If the rim is not smooth and you still have points that are unsafe, you’ll have to recycle the can. Another suggestion that we learned from one of our Instagram followers is to buy the Good Cook “Safe Cut” can opener. She wrote, “Not only does the can itself have no sharp edges afterward, you also end up with a lid that is sharp-edge-free!! It’s SO GOOD!”
